(Kathy and I have made several revisions to the first 9, so we are reposting them. We''ll make this a practice in the future.)

The Many Names for Sun - The Beginning

1. Sunrise, First Shine

I wake, the light demanding the day be joined,
morning so gentle I can’t resist the call.
By noon, shelter sought from the sky’s power;
twilight, to watch the day end in crimson blaze.—GDB

*

2. Sunbeam, One Leaf

Wandering, the creek flows over gray stones,
autumn heat streams through maple branches.
In a still pool, the fall of amber light;
a single red leaf whispers toward water. —KP

*

3. Sunny, Meadow

The sharp taste of dust and pollen greets us,
the trail a thin line across the meadow.
A flash of light breaks in the woods beyond:
Feather, horn, a reluctant traveler? –GDB

*

4. Sunflower, One Seed

We plant one small seed, black with white stripes,
from the dirt stretches a crooked green stem.
Open petals, yellow rays light blue sky,
one flower's face, my friend, many more seeds. –KP

*

5. Sundress, Porches

A flowered frock waves from the farm’s front porch;
each hand imagines smiles for him, one knows.
In the eaves, wasps paper their new queen’s nest;
her tea glass sweats, ice melts - flowers flooded. --GDB

*

6. Sunbreak, Clouds

At dusk heat falls, in the morning rises.
The day ablaze we wait for gentle winds,
wisps of white, soft rain. To quiet the sun --
a little cloud cover, night's fireflies.—KP

*

7. Sunburnt, Harvest

Skin the hue of overripe tomatoes,
the texture of the season’s last pumpkins –
too much time spent in brown-burnt wheat fields,
seldom wrapped in cool sheets, her healing hands.—GDB

*

8. Sunday, Sojourn

We leave again, the way of travelers.
Autumn mountains draw us ever onward
past topaz tamaracks, copper maples,
one farmer's market, roadside; we arrive.--KP

*

9. Sunglasses, Hunter

Behind his shades, the hint of a smile;
behind his smile, a hint of shadows –
past twilight, he drags the city’s streets,
eyes lost behind mirrors made for day.

Lisa, lol. Be patient. Good things take time. One of my teachers takes two even three years per poem and translation.

Smiles.

Gary
